Asha Niketan Kolkata
We are located in the heart of a poor urban neighbourhood, right next door to the Missionaries of Charity home in Tangra. Many of our residents have come to us from the Sisters next door. We have two houses – Adi Bari and Thakur Bari, home to both adults and children with a mental handicap and their assistants. In 2010, we welcomed Kusum, a young girl, who is the first member of our new women’s home situated on the first floor of the Adi Bari house and later on Riya joined to the team.
We have workshops for adults, located in both the complexes where we are busy making candles, tie & dye, batik & paper craft, and fine stitching work which we make into cards.
Adi Bari also houses our Day care centre where children with intellectual disabilities play, learn skills and their families receive guidance and support.
Children who we cannot accommodate are catered to by our Outreach programme. Assistants’ visit their homes once a week where they are supported on a one to one basis
Our community leader is Subrata Mukhopadhaya, and she is supported by live in and day assistants, and support staff.
