Jean Vanier, a Canadian, was born in 1928. After serving in the British and then Canadian navy, he left to study Philosophy and Theology in France. He taught Philosophy taught for a while. In 1964, in Trosly-Breuil (France) along with this spiritual guide, Father Thomas, he founded L’Arche, a community that welcomes people with intellectual disabilities. This initial L’Arche Community has grown and there are now over a hundred communities around the world. Jean Vanier is also the co-founder of Faith and Light, a movement that brings together people with intellectual disabilities, their parents and their friends for regular times of sharing support and prayer.
Jean Vanier is internationally recognized for his social leadership in making our world a more compassionate place. Now in his 80’s, through his books and public talks, he continues tirelessly to proclaim a message of justice and hope for all those living on the edges of society.
